10 website design mistakes that quietly cost you customers

10 website design mistakes that quietly cost you customers

Most websites don’t fail because they’re ugly. They fail because visitors can’t quickly understand what you do, why they should trust you and what to do next. Here are the ten mistakes I see most often when reviewing business websites, and how to fix them.

1. A headline that says nothing

“Welcome to our website” or “Quality you can trust” tells visitors nothing. Your main headline should say what you do and for whom, in plain words: “Wedding photography in Chicago” beats “Capturing moments”.

2. No clear next step

Every page needs one obvious action: book a call, get a quote, buy now. Put it in the header, after key sections and at the end of the page. If everything is a button, nothing is.

3. Slow loading

Visitors leave slow sites, especially on mobile data. Oversized images, too many plugins and heavy sliders are the usual culprits. Aim for your main content to appear in under 2.5 seconds. My guide on making WordPress faster covers the main fixes.

4. Designed for desktop only

More than half of most sites’ traffic is mobile. Check that text is readable without zooming, buttons are big enough to tap and forms are easy to fill on a phone.

5. Hidden contact details

People shouldn’t have to hunt for your phone number, email or location. Put them in the footer, on a contact page and, for local businesses, in the header.

6. Walls of text

Visitors scan before they read. Use short paragraphs, descriptive subheadings, bullet points and plenty of white space.

7. No proof

Testimonials, reviews, client logos, case studies and real photos build trust far more than claims like “best service”. Show evidence close to your call to action.

8. Stock photos that feel fake

Generic smiling-people-at-laptops photos make you look like everyone else. Real photos of your team, work or products, even simple ones, feel more trustworthy.

9. Too many choices

A menu with 15 items or a homepage that lists every service equally makes decisions harder. Group related items and highlight your most important offer.

10. Forms that ask too much

Every extra field reduces completions. For a first enquiry, name, email and a message is often enough. Ask for details later, in conversation.

Quick test: Show your homepage to someone for five seconds, then hide it. Ask what you do and what they’d click. If they can’t answer, your design needs work.

Fixing these doesn’t always mean a redesign

Many of these issues can be fixed in an afternoon: rewrite the headline, compress images, add a clear button, move your phone number. Bigger issues, like structure and mobile layout, usually benefit from a proper design pass.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which of these mistakes my site has?

Watch real people use it. Ask two or three customers or friends to find your prices or contact you while you watch, without helping. Free tools like Microsoft Clarity also show recordings and heatmaps of how visitors behave.

Should I redesign my whole website or fix it step by step?

If the structure works and the brand is current, fix the biggest problems first: headline, calls to action, speed and mobile layout. If the site is hard to update, slow at its core or no longer reflects your business, a redesign is usually more cost-effective.

Do sliders and animations hurt conversions?

Auto-rotating sliders often do: visitors rarely see past the first slide and they slow loading. Subtle animations that guide attention are fine, as long as they don’t delay content or distract from the main action.

Key takeaways

  • Say clearly what you do, for whom, and what visitors should do next.
  • Speed, mobile layout and trust signals matter more than decoration.
  • Small fixes often deliver big gains before a full redesign.
