Local SEO for small businesses: how to show up in Google Maps

Local SEO for small businesses: how to show up in Google Maps

If your customers are in a specific city, local SEO is the fastest way to get found. When someone searches “dentist near me” or “bakery in Austin”, Google shows a map with three businesses, often called the local pack. Those three get most of the clicks and calls.

Here’s how to give your business the best chance of appearing there, wherever in the world you are.

How Google ranks local results

Google uses three main factors:

  • Relevance: how well your business matches the search.
  • Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location in the query.
  • Prominence: how well-known and trusted your business is online, including reviews, links and mentions.

You can’t change distance, but you can improve relevance and prominence.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local ranking factor.

  • Choose the most accurate primary category and add secondary ones.
  • Fill in every field: hours, services, products, service areas and attributes.
  • Upload real photos of your work, team and location, and keep adding new ones.
  • Write a clear description with the services you offer and the area you serve.
  • Post updates and offers regularly.

2. Keep your NAP consistent

NAP means Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, Google profile, social media and directories. Small differences like “St.” vs “Street” are fine, but different phone numbers or old addresses confuse Google.

3. Get more (and better) reviews

Reviews influence both ranking and whether people click.

  • Ask every happy customer, ideally right after a successful job.
  • Send a direct review link so it takes 30 seconds.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and specifically.
  • Never buy reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.

4. Build local pages on your website

If you serve several cities or neighbourhoods, create a genuinely useful page for each one, with local details, projects you’ve done there and directions. Avoid copying the same page and only swapping the city name.

Make sure your website also has:

  • Your address and phone number in the footer.
  • An embedded map on the contact page.
  • LocalBusiness structured data (schema markup).
  • Fast loading on mobile, because most local searches happen on phones.

Citations are mentions of your business on other sites: industry directories, chambers of commerce, local news sites and supplier pages. Links from respected local organisations, such as a sponsored event or a local association, are especially valuable.

Tip: Start with the big platforms in your country (for example Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and industry directories), then add niche local ones.

6. Track what matters

In your Google Business Profile insights, watch calls, website clicks and direction requests. In Google Search Console, check which local searches bring visitors to your site. These numbers matter more than any single ranking position.

How long does local SEO take?

You can see changes in a few weeks after fixing your profile, but strong local rankings usually take three to six months of steady work, especially in competitive cities.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a physical address to rank in Google Maps?

You need a real business address or a service area. Service-area businesses, like plumbers or mobile beauticians, can hide their address and list the areas they serve instead. Virtual offices and fake addresses violate Google’s guidelines.

Does my website affect local rankings?

Yes. Google looks at your website’s relevance and authority, so clear service pages, your contact details and a fast, mobile-friendly site all support your Google Business Profile.

How many reviews do I need?

There’s no magic number. What matters is having more recent, genuine reviews than nearby competitors, with responses from you. A steady flow of new reviews beats a burst followed by silence.

Can I rank in a city where I don’t have an office?

In the map results it’s difficult, because distance matters. You can still rank in regular search results for that city with a strong, genuinely useful location page.

Key takeaways

  • Your Google Business Profile is the biggest local ranking factor.
  • Keep name, address and phone identical everywhere.
  • Earn reviews steadily and reply to all of them.
